Kaleigh Sparks - February 2024

Our February 911der Women spotlight of the month is Kaleigh Sparks of Fairbanks Emergency Communications Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. Kaleigh was nominated by Shift Supervisor, Sara Sandbo Here’s what Sara had to say:

“Kaleigh Sparks started her career in 9-1-1 in late 2020 quickly finishing training and serving her hometown of Fairbanks, Alaska as a dispatcher until Fall 2021 when she left to pursue her dream and attend esthetician school. Once finished, Kaleigh returned to us and continued her role as dispatcher while doing esthetics on the side. Fast forward to 2023, and Kaleigh's accomplishments are nothing short of remarkable. She has ascended to roles such as communications training officer and acting shift supervisor, while also completing Fitch & Associates - Communication Center Manager training and pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Juggling a more than full-time work schedule and raising her daughter Lexi, Kaleigh's dedication is awe-inspiring.

Fortunately, I have been with Kaleigh throughout her career which allowed me to watch her flower into a dedicated public safety professional and role model for others at our center. Kaleigh did not have the best support growing up and it’s truly admirable to see her lead and be a position of support for her peers in the center. While her plate is always full, she is always willing to lend a hand and share her expertise. Throughout her remarkable journey, I have had the privilege of witnessing Kaleigh's transformation. From her humble beginnings as a newcomer unsure of what lay ahead, Kaleigh has evolved into a confident, intelligent, and truly inspiring woman. Her resilience and unwavering commitment serve as a testament to her character. Kaleigh epitomizes the essence of the 911der woman, a symbol of strength and determination in our field.”

Valerie S. D’Intino, ENP - January 2024

Valerie began her career in 911 in 1998 when she became a Public Safety Telecommunicator for Christiansburg Police Department.  She then became a CTO, and later a supervisor while working with the Christiansburg Police Department.  Valerie joined the New River Valley Emergency Communications Regional Authority (NRV 911) in 2015 as the first Training Coordinator for this newly formed agency.
As Training Coordinator for NRV 911, Valerie oversees the CTOs and their assigned trainees, as well as serving on the hiring panel.  Newly selected team members are provided on-boarding and software education designed and presented by Valerie.

Valerie is a DCJS General Instructor as well, and teaches at the Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy. Valerie obtained her Emergency Number Professional Certification in October 2022. She also began APCO's RPL program in 2022.  Her “project” for RPL is to obtain the ATPC (Agency Training Program Certification) for NRV 911.  Her passions lie in helping to develop staff to their fullest potential through opportunities for education, as well as empowerment through encouragement and affirmations.

Off duty you’ll find her traveling with her grandchildren or volunteering at a senior assisted living facility teaching Zumba Gold® (seated fitness) to residents.

I admire Valerie because she sets her mind to something and gets it done, no matter what or who stands in her way. She brings a unique and compassionate perspective to any situations that arise. Valerie served as my trainer at NRV 911 and ensured that each day the pillars of responder safety, service to the citizens, competency, and compassion were on the forefront of my mind each day. When we receive those calls about the individuals asking about the time of the parade or directions, many telecommunicators might get frustrated however, I ask myself how would Valerie respond? Valerie ensured that compassion was ingrained into my training process and it makes me a better telecommunicator each and every day. She also ensures that others know their value and spreads joy almost daily with positive affirmations to all staff. Valerie has been a rockstar this past year, she created and developed sessions for conferences, completed her ENP certification, and began APCO’s RPL program. It’s Valerie’s compassion, mindfulness, and tenacity that are her most admirable qualities.

Tina Reece - October 2023

Our October 911der Women spotlight of the month is Tina Reece of the St. Charles City PD in Missouri! Tina was nominated by Ashley Michels. Here’s what Ashley had to say:

“Tina Reece has been a police dispatcher at the St. Charles City Police Department since 2007. During her time at the police department, Tina has served as a Communications Training Officer and our agency’s TAC (Terminal Agency Coordinator.)

In December of 2022, while working a shift on the dispatch floor, Tina received a phone call that would forever change her life. Tina was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

Throughout her diagnoses, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and countless doctor’s appointments, Tina has continued to put her whole heart into her dispatching career.  Tina has shown courage, strength and dedication to her agency and has been loved and supported by her coworkers.

Tina is a true 911derWoman.”

Kylee Dredla - August 2023

Our August 911der Women spotlight of the month is Kylee Dredla, Dispatcher at North Platte PD in Nebraska! Kylee was nominated by Stephanie Lewis. Here’s what Stephanie had to say:

“Kylee Dredla is by far one of the top dispatchers you'll ever meet. She had a call out in another town about 30 minutes away and we couldn't get ahold of the volunteer department to get help to the patient. Kylee did CPR for about 45 minutes until we could get help headed that way. When she hung up the phone, she was ready for the next call. Kylee is truly the calm voice in the night. She also had a call about a year ago where a family was being held at gunpoint by a crazy man who thought they were being too loud. She made sure everyone, including our deputies, went home safe that night. She is truly an inspiration and I believe she is truly a 911der woman!”

Krista Amaro - July 2023

Our July 911der Women spotlight of the month is Krista Amaro, Dispatch Supervisor at Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office! Krista was nominated by Kansas APCO Chapter President, Kelly Chess. Here’s what Kelly had to say:

“Krista Amaro has been a servant leader in 911 for 17 years, proudly representing a one-seater dispatch center in a small town tucked back in the flattest parts of Kansas where the tumbleweeds tumble. I met her 4 years ago at a Kansas APCO conference when she decided to push her 911 career a little further by running for the 2nd Vice President position on the board. Little did I know at the time, this beautiful woman would quickly become my friend and one of the brightest lights in my life.

Krista has tirelessly dedicated her time running the show at Kiowa County 911- she is a true "Jane of all trades". She manages the dispatch center full-time, transports the inmates for the jail, has been known to dress out the inmates, and covers the consoles when they are short staffed. She is always the first to lend a helping hand wherever and whenever, with no questions asked, no keeping track and never an ulterior motive. She is genuine in everything she says and more importantly, she follows through. She is the record keeper, the mail carrier, court reporter, voucher signer, and her Sheriff's right hand. She is involved in several committees throughout the state of Kansas, on multiple state boards and is passionate about speaking on behalf of the smaller dispatch centers throughout Kansas.

This is just a small list of what she does on a daily basis. Outside of work, Krista is very dedicated to her family, farm animals and friends. I often wonder how she is able to manage all of these things without losing her mind, but instead, she continues forward with a smile and her incredible sense of humor.

I admire her grit, her grace, and her authenticity. I love her heart, her smile, and all of the little things that make her special. Most of all, I'm grateful for her friendship. She is a quarter in a sea of pennies.”

Sarah Bryan - June 2023

Our June 911der Women spotlight of the month is Sarah Bryan, Senior Sheriff’s 911 Communications Officer in CA! Sarah was nominated by Training Supervisor, Randy Merrill. Here’s what Randy had to say:

Senior Sheriff’s 911 Communications Officer Sarah Bryan has been employed with Riverside Sheriff’s Department since August 2005. She excelled as a dispatcher and became a Communications Training Officer in 2008, fueling her passion for training. She has guided many new dispatchers successfully through their training and continued to be a mentor to them after their completion of training. In 2019 she was selected to transition to the Sheriff’s Academy, serving as an instructor at our basic dispatch academy. In this capacity she worked in a classroom setting teaching all newly hired dispatchers the basics of the position prior to the start of their one-on-one training. In 2022 she transferred back to the dispatch center, however, has since filled in on several occasions during the absence of instructors.

During her time at the academy, she was part of a team that worked tirelessly updating training materials and manuals, and adding California POST requirements, ultimately allowing our academy to become POST certified. This has allowed our dispatchers to graduate our academy as POST certified dispatchers, preventing the need to send them to an additional three-week training course, which greatly impacts our staffing levels.

In addition, while she was at the training center, our department opened up a new sheriff’s station. She was a significant help in updating information for the new station from tests, maps, and all geography changes.  She also trained her replacement for the academy position and left a complete step by step instructional manual for any questions they might have.  She also has made up an instructional manual for any deputies that are temporarily assigned to dispatch. Sarah goes above and beyond what is asked or expected from her. She is highly respected among her peers as well as new trainees who are at the Academy. While she does not like to be in the spotlight, she is more than deserving of this award.”

Kelsey M. Carpenter - May 2023

Our May 911der Women spotlight of the month is Kelsey M. Carpenter, Communications Officer - Washington County Department of Public Safety in NY! Kelsey was nominated by Deputy Director, Tim Hardy, ENP. Here’s what Tim had to say:

Kelsey kicked off her interest in the First Responder community by joining the Greenwich Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter and later continued to achieve her NYS Emergency Medical Technician certification and also joined the Emergency Medical Service as a volunteer. While hoping to further her career in Public Safety, Kelsey developed an interest in what happens "under the headset" (or behind the scenes) and was selected following interviews to join our team at the Department of Public Safety. Kelsey progressed quickly through our lengthy Communications Officer training process and became a key contributor to our organization and our First Responder community! Kelsey continues to strive to help our organization and team progress, she's joined other members of our Education and Outreach team in being part of the development and delivery of an "Introduction to Emergency Communications" course for our local Criminal Justice Studies two-year program at the Warren-Washington-Hamilton-Saratoga-Essex BOCES, which we recently kicked off for the first time this year! Kelsey is very well known amongst our team to volunteer for any opportunity to help shape the future of our operation and interact with our First Responder partners or communities. As of late Kelsey and her fellow shift mates have been "under the headset" for a number of extremely difficult and challenging calls, yet maintaining their professionalism and dedication to those who rely on our services. We are looking forward to Kelsey being a key member of our team for many years into the future, continuing to help make our team and organization the best possible for our communities!”

Kelsey has recently been featured in our "Under the Headset" profile series on our facebook page, which can be viewed here: https://www.facebook.com/WashCoNYDPS911/posts/pfbid0wPgciedkAxpnPNW2HKVk9eyHW7QYxWEWNBxTYm8itF84FtBhvXTpamXwH2mPtkmCl

Suzan Taubel - April 2023

Our April 911der Women spotlight of the month is SuzanTaubel of the Champaign Countywide Communication Center in Springfield, Ohio! Suzan was nominated by Steven Molton. Here’s what Steven had to say:

“Suzan started her career as a dispatcher in 2018 with Champaign County.  She quickly became very acclimated to the dispatcher duties and responsibilities.   I had the honor of working with and being her shift supervisor for over a year.

As a retired police officer of 28 years, I would have loved having Suzan being my dispatcher.  Officers and deputies have commented about her being one of the best dispatchers they have ever had.

During my time at the center, Suzan became one of my favorite coworkers of my many years in public safety.  I looked forward to working shifts with her knowing that if bad things were going to happen, we would be able to handle it.

I remember a young lady that came to our center and Suzan was selected to train her.  She was stubborn and always seemed to push back when her supervisor (me) told her things that needed to be done.  Suzan became a bridge between the young lady and myself (who I had met when she was a youth member in my church with my children).  With Suzan's training and mentorship, this young lady became an outstanding dispatcher that I would not hesitate to work with.

I left the Champaign Countywide Communication Center in late 2019 for a less stressful environment that was closer to my home.  When job openings come up at my current agency, Suzan is the first person I go to and she always turns me down.

In 2022, Suzan went to Florida as a member of the OHIO TERT (Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce) to assist after Hurricane Ian hit the Florida area.

Unfortunately, I only had a little over a year of working with her.  If I was still her coworker, I am sure I could write chapters of how great Suzan is.

I have seen in my career people going above and beyond the call of duty and their efforts go unrecognized.  I believe Suzan should be recognized because going above and beyond is her normal way of doing business. “

Angie Schaefer - March 2023

Our March 911der Women spotlight of the month is Angie Schaefer from Watertown Police Department in Watertown, South Dakota! Angie was nominated by Kaitlin Fuerstenau. Here’s what Kaitlin had to say:

“They define a true leader as somebody who acts with integrity, establishes trust, helps people reach their full potential, and inspires excellence.  These items describe Angie to a “T”. Angie always acts in a professional manner toward her co-workers and callers ensuring that everybody receives the same top-notch service regardless of how her day has gone or what pressures she may be facing. Angie is consistently building trust with all of the communications officers as a person most of us feel very comfortable going to with an issues both professional and personal. Angie is always looking for ways to help other communication officers reach their full potential by pointing out relevant trainings; diligently working on Q’s, providing constructive feedback to help everybody improve their performance, and finding positive and encouraging words to build us up when we’ve had a difficult call. They say a dispatcher is the calm voice in the dark and Angie truly is that calm voice in the dark. Regardless of the situation, Angie remains calm and diligently works through the call to figure out what kind of assistance is needed, gets that assistance started, and remains with the caller until help has arrived. The care and compassion that you hear in each and every one of her calls inspires you to do better and be a better dispatcher.  Angie is always going above and beyond to make sure the communication center runs smoothly. She consistently fills in shifts wherever needed, helps work schedules around to ensure people can have the time off they need/request as to help ensure we’re not burning out, and does so without looking for anything in return, praise, or recognition. She’s always working “behind the scene” in a variety of facets to solve problems and create continuity within the center that many of us may not even realize. She puts her heart and soul into the center and for the PD without a second thought every single day and will always do whatever it takes to ensure we are successful.”

Heather Hall - February 2023

Our February 911der Women spotlight of the month is Heather Hall from Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office in Texas! Heather was nominated by Sgt. Erika Gomez. Here’s what Sgt. Gomez had to say:

“I would like to nominate Heather Hall, the Communications Lieutenant with Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office. She is the first female civilian to ever hold this position at our agency. Heather started at our agency in October of 2001 and quickly rose in ranks and became a Dispatch Sergeant soon after. Not only was she in charge of supervising her shift and a working Sergeant, she also took over TAC responsibilities and the Training Department. She developed our previous training manual and trained many while doing all her other responsibilities!

Since she took over the Communications Division in October of 2021, she has made many beneficial changes to our dispatch department. She looks out for our best interests and stands up for us when needed. She does everything possible to be fair and consistent and ensure that she keeps her promises when she makes them.

Like many other agencies, we have had many issues with retention and getting people hired and in the door to train. She has maintained a positive attitude throughout all these difficulties and has stepped in to assist dispatch when needed.

She was able to get approval from the Sheriff to hire additional dispatch personnel as well as another clerk for the Warrants Dept. Soon after she took over the Lieutenant position, four new dispatch supervisors were hired on as well! This in itself was a struggle for all parties involved. We had four new supervisors learning how to lead their teams and work through the difficulties of being short staffed. We have always been able to go to Heather for any suggestions and questions. We love that she keeps an open mind and will listen to what we propose. She is definitely an asset to our agency. We are very lucky to have her!”

Khrystyna Stark - January 2023

Our January 911der Woman of the month is Khrystyna Stark, a telecommunicator/CTO at Boone County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois. Khrystyna was nominated by Jeanine Kaplan, ENP. Here’s what Jeanine had to say:

"I was fortunate enough to interview, mentor, and more importantly become friends with Khrystyna over the last 7 years.  Khrystyna is a humble, grateful, and motivating person while coming in each day, putting her head in her headset and focusing on providing the best standard of care to the community.  She takes pride in her work, ensures that the people she trains understands the importance of safety not only the community but the field units as well.  More importantly, she always does it in the most respectful way possible.  She is patient and her demeanor hasn't changed in her 7 years in 911.  She isn't involved in the drama and focuses on personal accountability and her health.  She commits herself to fitness and running 911 5k's, her mental health by reading personal development books regularly to maintain a safe mental space for such a strenuous career path.  She does all of this while raising 3 small children with her husband who is the epitome of the Midwest man who provides for their family and is often working extended hours similar to her dispatching hours.  She doesn't complain, in fact she always makes the family's schedule work and doesn't let her personal stress affect her demeanor at work or how she treats her coworkers or the community she serves. She is active in the CTO program, has volunteered to attend the State 911 conference, and always finds ways to better herself and the organization.  Coming from a smaller agency there aren't always a lot of opportunities for growth and she is always looking for opportunities to bring to her agency. She is the epitome of a 911der Woman.  Anyone who knows her would agree that her humble demeanor, her ability to come in and get the job done effectively with the passion and drive she has makes her more than deserving for Woman of the Month!"

Kimberly Taylor - October 2021

Our October 911der Women spotlight of the month is Kimberly Taylor from Lawrenceville Police Department in Georgia! Kimberly was nominated by Ryan Dedmon. Here’s what Ryan had to say:

Kimberly is a thirteen-year veteran of the Lawrenceville Police Department (GA). She has been a Training Officer for eleven years and is currently the Communications Training Coordinator for the department. Kimberly has a passion for training and constantly looks for ways to improve training. Beyond training and her work in the Communications Division, she serves as Secretary for the Lawrenceville Police Benevolent Fund and is a member of her department’s Peer Support Team.

A few weeks ago, I saw a post that Kimberly made in a private group on Facebook that is designated for public-safety trainers. Her post included a picture of an officer working with her in dispatch and a short message that shared the benefits of the experience. Kimberly wrote a guest blog for the 911 Training Institute further sharing about the benefits of the experience of officers doing sit-alongs in dispatch and dispatchers going on ride-alongs in the field.

As we strive to do what we can to uplift our profession, a little creativity and empathy can go a very long way. Sharing ways that we can help each other is what our 911der Women community is all about. In her article, she describes a creative approach to make both dispatchers and officers better at their respective jobs... by learning about the duties/responsibilities of the other. She implemented this approach into training at the Lawrenceville Police Department with great success.

Kimberly’s article is now posted on the 911TI website and you can check it out here: https://www.911training.net/post/come-sit-a-spell

Pam Opoka - July 2021

Our July 911der Woman spotlight of the month is Pam Opoka from MARC! Pam was nominated by Gary Bell. Here's what Gary had to say:

“Pam was a co-chair of the NENA Peer Support work group and has dedicated herself to the wellness and success of others both personally and professionally. Her work in her region, for NENA and more importantly and selflessly the industry in this much needed field of work and study speak volumes to the impact that she has already had. Not only has she created a regional peer support team for the MARC region, she has also assisted in establishing another much needed Commanders level peer-support team. This recognition and gap that existed for leaders in the space is something that has continued to grow in the industry and I have yet to see a more rounded and established program, which can and should be attributed to Pam.

Some of the promotional materials she has been a part of to support an Equestrian model in providing an effective, hands on approach in dealing with the stressors in life to include relatable leadership training in this space is simply amazing. Being a previous owner and trainer of horses, this resonated with me, and the method in the War Horses program is one that can be applied to ECC/PSAP professionals, upon all levels.

This program inspired me to do more and give more to others and with the help of my peers in WI, 911 leaders have been coming together to discuss our issues and provide support to each other, as we work to establish our formal group.

Her professionalism and ability to be fierce while being vulnerable in running for the North Central Regional Director position with NENA this past year during COVID was wonderful to witness. Her contributions to the industry and preparation for that election, while being supportive and appreciative to her opponents showed and highlighted her level of professionalism, candor and grace.

The impact she has had and will continue to make in this space is outstanding.”

Congratulations to Pam, and thank you for everything you do!

Kaitie Nelson.jpg

Katie Nelson - June 2021

Our June 911der Woman spotlight of the month is Katie Nelson from the Ellsworth Sheriff Dept. in Ellsworth Kansas! Katie was nominated by Linda Kyler. Here's what Linda had to say:

Katie has always shown strong relationships with her employees and is very dedicated to meeting all the needs of the community as well as her dispatch team. Katie has also proven that no matter what kind of diversity our team faces, the center is always working together well. She stands tall with her employees and will always go the extra mile for them.

Katie is a wife and mother of 2 boys that she shuffles to games and activities but makes sure she is still verbally and physically there for her team.

Katie has also managed to get a lot of updates in the last three years I have been with the department to make it as modern as possible.

I know there are so many good things to say , but it is hard to put into words and show her how much she is appreciated.

Congratulations, Katie and thank you for everything you do!

Chrissy 2.png

Crissy Livengood - April 2021

Our April 911derWoman spotlight of the month is Crissy Livengood from Kansas! Chrissy was nominated by Darcy Weis. Here's what Darcy had to say:

I would like to nominate our Director, Crissy Livengood. I have worked with Crissy for 16 years and watched her take on our department as Director a few years into her career as a dispatcher and take us where we are today. She is a natural leader and has stepped up to be that for us; but it goes so much further than that. Crissy has always shown support and encouragement to those around her starting out in their career or taking advancements. whether part of our department or not. She is quick to offer assistance and guidance and gives of herself endlessly. Crissy is an inspiration to many and I'm not sure she knows how valued and respected she is.

Congratulations, Crissy and thank you for everything you do!

Kimber Parker March 2021.png

Kimber Parker - March 2021

Our March 911derWoman spotlight of the month is Kimber Parker from Alabama! Kimber was nominated by Valerie Minor. Here's what Valerie had to say:

"If I am being one hundred percent honest, being a telecommunicator is not something I ever thought would be in my career journey. Rather, it is something I stumbled into. I say that to preface a story of a young coworker that was just starting her career as a telecommunicator with our department after leaving a job as a dispatcher for a local ambulance company. I remember it just like it was yesterday ...

We both happened to be outside of our communications center at the same time. She was obviously upset. I inquired if she was ok and if there was something I could help with. She was having a difficult time in training for a variety of reasons. I do not remember exactly what I said or asked her, but I will never be able to forget her response. Holding back watery eyes she replied, "I've always wanted to be a first responder and I know I can't physically work in the field ... this is the only way I can do it, from the console." You see, she has cerebral palsy and a more severe form of scoliosis. Her response washed over me like the undertow of Alabama's gulf coast. If you've experienced that you know what I mean ... the waves push you one way while the undertow sucks all the sand out from under your feet, rendering you helpless.

Kimber Parker did not give up that day, nor any other of her extremely difficult days. She has undergone two extensive surgeries in the past two years that put her out of work for months and each time she had to endure grueling physical therapy in order to be able to walk again. Her fight to overcome her pain and physical limitations every day to serve our community inspires me more than she will ever be able to comprehend. There have been times when I was in pain and I reminded myself of what all she has overcome (and continues to) to be able to sit behind this console and it helps me push through.

That is inspiring enough, right? But wait, there's more! Kimber strives each day to keep us in good morale. There are times we may get on the wrong path in a conversation and she steers us back to the right path. She consistently works to bring personalities together and foster community not only within our shift and division but also with all the other agencies in our cohabitated center,

Kimber, you make a difference in the lives of those around you and on the other side of the radio and phone, never forget that.”

Congratulations, Kimber and thank you for everything you do!

January 2021.jpg

Melinda Chynoweth - January 2021

Our January Wonder Woman Spotlight of the Month is Melina Chynoweth from Idaho.  Melinda was nominated by Eda Beams. Here’s what Eda had to say:

“I would like to nominate my incredible dispatcher friend/partner in crime, Melinda Chynoweth. Melinda and I started dispatching a few months apart in 1992. She has remained in dispatch while undergoing a consolidation, extreme growth in our local areas and always excels. She is a long time CTO, heads up the warrant division in her spare time and helps with ensuring policies and procedures are up-to-date. Melinda is also a single mom with two kids at home and still works lots of overtime. She has a servant’s heart and truly gives her best in every situation.”

Congratulations, Melinda, and thank you for everything you do!

Brittany Oct 2020.jpg

Brittany Gooding - October 2020

Our October Wonder Woman Spotlight of the Month is Brittany Gooding from Charleston, South Carolina. Brittany was nominated by about 5,600 of her closest friends in the 911der Women community. In the words of Kaitlin Jordan, “Brittany is a 911 call taker at our center. She is also a crazy huge inspiration to the world. Here’s why…

Brittany became deaf as an adult. Quite a life hurdle, but it was just a speed bump for her. She became a 911 call taker despite that! No big deal. Two years ago she was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation. Part of her brain stem was being pushed down her spinal cord. Since that diagnosis, she has had nine (NINE!) surgeries to fix the original problem and resulting complications; her ninth surgery was completed this week. Through all of this, she has continued working, saving lives and comforting callers with her calm demeanor. She is a true 911der Woman. She is often in extreme pain and very tired, but she continues to push ahead. Recently she registered for the virtual Wonder Woman 5K. She knew she couldn’t do it all in one walk, but she knew she could do it.”

Days before her ninth surgery, she finished her 5K by walking two miles with Kaitlin and her amazing pup, Asher. We hope Brittany inspires you as she has so many of us in this community. Her spirit exemplifies the idea that we can do anything we put our minds to, we just have to want it bad enough and check all excuses at the door. Thank you, Brittany, for being you and sharing your story.

Roxann Blog July2020.jpg

Roxanne Van Gundy - August 2020

Our August Wonder Woman Spotlight of the month is Roxanne Van Gundy. Roxy was nominated by Becky Snook. Here’s what Becky had to say:

“If you have been on this group for any length of time, you know Roxy! Roxy is a 911 Director in Lyon County Emergency Communications in Kansas. Roxy has been in the biz for about 15 years and has even worked for the Alaska Highway Patrol! How cool is that? I have only really known Roxy for a few years, but it feels like our friendship has been much longer than that. She is such positive person and always wanting to lift people up when they are down. I truly have enjoyed getting to know her on a personal level and as a leading woman in our industry. Roxy and I have worked together as NENA board members in Kansas and in other leadership groups. During that time, I have truly come to respect her experience and willingness to help in any way she can."

On a personal note, I have gotten to know Roxy over the past year and she truly has a heart of gold. She is always looking out for and taking care of others. Her passion for 911 radiates from her, and thank goodness, it is contagious.

Halcyon 2.jpg

Halcyon Frank - June 2020

Our June Wonder Woman Spotlight of the month is Halcyon Frank. Halcyon is a dispatcher by night, entrepreneur by day. She recently founded and launched The Dispatch Lab, a place where you can “mix together the right elements of on-site and online training with networking and communication to develop individual and group success”.

I nominated Halcyon because not only is she an inspiration to me, my own personal hype squad, and the biggest encourager to all of her friends, but also because she cares deeply about this movement. Every time I talk to her she comes up with another idea for us... I can barely keep up! She has wisdom and experience beyond her years and uses it to help others. She started #BeAnEncourager, a hashtag I try to live by every day. I'm in awe of her positive attitude in her approach to dispatching and her unwavering belief that we have the power to make the environment in the 911 center better for everyone if we work together.

Congratulations Halcyon! And please keep doing what your doing, the world needs it!

Cathty May 2020 Spotlight.jpg

Cathy Orcutt - May 2020

Our 911derWomen Spotlight of the Month for May was Cathy Orcutt. Cathy was nominated by Jenny Gordon Mason. Here's what Jenny had to say:

"I’d like to nominate Cathy Orcutt for the monthly spotlight. She is a perfect example of someone who gives her all, is there for everyone and wears her heart on her sleeve. She is an amazing confidant and always tells you her honest thoughts - even when they might be hard to hear! She has been engaged on this page and has contributed with some great ideas to add to the support it offers. A little history: Cathy served in the US Navy as a quartermaster and MP. (Thank you for your service!!!) She started as a dispatcher at the Linn County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon in 1989. She was promoted within the agency and retired as the Communications Manager in 2019, after 30 years. She is an active member of Oregon APCO/NENA, serving many years as the chair of the awards committee, it’s president in 2019, and is the immediate past President on this year’s board. She has been an instructor at the Oregon Public Safety Academy, and currently serves on the state Telecom Curriculum Committee. She is highly respected as a leader in the industry here in Oregon and beyond! If you’ve met her, you love her! She lives in Oregon with her husband Brian. She is an amazing artist (seriously! Look at her page!) and enjoys to travel. Cathy is a loving, supportive, fabulous woman. I feel blessed to call her friend and I know others would agree that she is deserving to be honored as a 911derwoman!”

Tanya Lee - April 2020

Our 911derWoman spotlight of the month for April was Tanya Lee. Tanya was nominated by Tracy Eldridge. Here's what Tracy had to say:
"I want to nominate Tanya Lee. While she is on the industry partner side and did not land here after being under the headset, she is one of the most kind, compassionate caring people to enter this space. Not only did she capture the heart of one of 911's biggest tragedies, she has grown through some of her own pretty tough stuff and I admire her tenacity and grace as she does so. I have watched her confidence grow so much since she joined this amazing 911 family. I have seen her come out of her comfort zone on so many occasions and she epitomized a 911derWoman; she is the that person that will fix your crown without telling the world it is crooked.”

Glenna Johnson - March 2020

Our 911derWoman spotlight of the month for March was Glenna Johnson. Glenna was nominated by Sandy Stansell. Here's what Sandy had to say:

"I nominate Glenna Johnson, 911 Coordinator from DeKalb Co, Illinois for her tireless support, time and extensive knowledge that she has given to all the counties who make up the Northern IL NG 911 Alliance (known as NINGA). Glenna has gone above and beyond to ensure that all of us make it past the finish line with this project that will bring NG911 to 9 counties! Glenna has an extensive knowledge in the Telco world along with her years of experience as a 911 professional. She also served as the Region 3 Director of Illinois NENA. The fact that she avails herself without hesitation to anyone who is seeking help about any facet of 911, truly makes her an amazing 911derWoman and so deserving of the spotlight."

On a personal note, I, Sara, have had the absolute privileged and pleasure of working with Glenna for several years. I would like to add that I learned so much from Glenna - not only about 911 but about how to lead by example, how to treat people, and that patience and kindness are what freakin' matters in this world. Thank you, Glenna, for being the light..

Laurie Anderson - January 2020

I had the pleasure or presenting our January 911derWoman Spotlight of the Month, Laurie Anderson! Laurie has been with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office in Florida for over 28 years. She began as a telecommunicator and quickly progressed to becoming the training officer and instructor, then supervisor, training coordinator, all the way to her current position as the E911 Coordinator. Laurie was the Florida NENA President and is currently a candidate for the 2020 NENA Board of Directors for the position of 2nd Vice President!

NENA’s Standards and Best Practices Conference (SBP) was held in January. This has raised the issue that we’ve been discussing within the group about the number of women on Standards Committees. I wanted to highlight Laurie as a woman who got her start as a telecommunicator and worked her way onto standards committees and is currently the Co-Chair of NENA's Wellness Committee, which has become NENA's largest committee. Not only that, but she co-presented at SBP on the big stage! She is a beautiful example of what you can accomplish with the drive and the vision.

Here's what Laurie had to say about getting involved: “Becoming involved is one of the best ways to learn, even if you don’t think you “know enough” or are “experienced enough”. Take every experience and turn it into a learning opportunity. For me, learning about the many aspects and intricacies of 9-1-1 has been an exciting life-long journey that is not over yet!”

Harriet Rennie-Brown - November 2019

Our 911derWoman spotlight for the month of November was Harriet Rennie-Brown! Harriet was nominated by Cindy Homant. Here's what Cindy had to say:

"Harriet Rennie-Brown started the State 911 Administration office in Michigan 15 years ago! She has been the sole leader here and Friday was her last day as she moves on to be the National Executive Director at NASNA. A position that is very well deserved! The State of Michigan has been well served by Harriet and she has a passion for 911 like no one I have ever met. Her tireless dedication to moving public safety initiatives and technology forward is impressive and she is always willing to educate those unaware of what 911 truly does. She is an amazing leader for her staff and supports us in all of our endeavors. She encourages us to grow and be the best we can be. She is our family and will be missed more than she will ever know! She leaves big shoes to fill and a legacy that will be unmatched as she was the first to go where no one had gone before. She will do great things for 911 nationally, and we are excited for her to spread her wings and know she took a little part of us with her on her adventure!"

Dannell Oct 2019 Spotlight.jpg

Dannell Hooper - October 2019

Our 911derWoman spotlight of the month for October was Dannell Hooper! Dannell was nominated by Cathy Orcutt. Here's what Cathy had to say:

“Dannell is dedicated, smart, funny, giving and truly someone who wants to make her PSAP better for everyone. Dannell works at Columbia County 911 in Oregon and is truly a nice person. Her smile lights up the whole room and she makes you feel like you are the only person in the room too. She has great ideas and has worked hard to make changes at her center that help others do their job more efficiently. Dannell is also a volunteer with Make a Wish Oregon and does an incredible job there, making sure her wish kids feel special.”

MIchelle+Abbot.jpg

Michele Abbott - September 2019

Our 911derWoman spotlight of the month for September was Michele Abbott! Michele was nominated by Becky Snook. Here's what Becky had to say:

“I would like to submit Michele Abbott from Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications in Kansas.

Michele has been a long time mentor to me in the 911 industry and has helped me strive to leadership positions in our state. She is always positive and wanting to help anyone who needs it. She has helped our state in technology by being a leader in the working groups to get us to the next level in NG911. She is the hardest working woman I know and a wonderful friend who is always thinking of others.

Michele has been in a Board member role in our Kansas APCO chapter for several years. She has given every new board member guidance on how to be the next great leaders in our state chapter and how to work through issues through her experiences. Her knowledge is invaluable.”

Tami.jpg

Tami Atkinson - August 2019

Our Spotlight Wonder Woman for the month of August was Tami Atkinson nominated by Charlotte Clements!

Charlotte says, "Never in my life have I met someone with so much love and passion for EVERY person that she meets – Tami goes above and beyond to make sure that every student she has thrives and gets the best start in this career field that they can – She is real when teaching and holds nothing back, what you see is what you get. Nothing is out of bounds, Tami is honest and raw when it comes to talking about even the most difficult of topics – It is truly inspirational to see someone with over 30 years of experience still have so much enthusiasm and drive for the work that she does.

Tami makes a difference each and every day to anyone that crosses her path, students and strangers alike. There really are no words that do this wonder woman justice – Thank you Tami for being the amazing role model you are!"

Terri & I 2016.png

Terri Sherman - July 2019

Our member spotlight for July was Terri Sherman, nominated by Maryanne! Here’s what she had to say:

“Terri currently is the manager of the Converse County Communications Center in Douglas Wyoming.

We met when she was supervisor over the Teton County Sheriff Dispatch in Wyoming. We instantly had a connection. Terri implemented the text to 911 in that area and dealt with the Great American Eclipse of 2017 which was right over her county and service area.

She has been such an inspiration to me. She is so quick to answer my calls whenever I have questions or just need a pick me up. She has been a supervisor a bit longer that I and has helped me with so much. She is a great example to me. Terri is like a sister to me.”

Leah Missildine - June 2019

Our first 911derWoman Spotlight of the Month is Leah Missildine. I nominated Leah, the Executive Director of the Alabama 911 Board and my perpetual outfit twin. She has inspired me in so many ways. She has brought people of all backgrounds and experiences together in Alabama to collaborate on a statewide NG911 network! She uses her background as a telecommunicator to work with the PSAPs throughout her state every single day. She works incredibly hard to stay ahead of whatever comes her way as an executive director, and does it with strength, grace, professionalism and kindness. Additionally, she is the mother of a toddler boy, which as many of us know, pretty much makes her a super hero.
